Winter 1793. Master and Commander Charles Hayden's orders are to return to the ill-fated frigate, HMS Themis. Placed in temporary command, he is to join the escort for the last convoy of the season - braving the wintry seas. Hayden's uncanny knack for attracting the attention of the French navy sees the Themis thrown back into action only hours out of port. Soon, Hayden's captaincy and military skill are stretched to their utmost as he finds himself at the vanguard of this brutal clash of empires.
A Battle Won (Audible Audio Edition) Sean Thomas Russell Nick Boulton Whole Story Audiobooks Books
Our hero Charles Hayden, is reunited with the crew of the Themis, the crew and ship no one will have. That is a good thing for we like these characters. We have spent time with them and in the first book we saw how heroic and adaptable they all were. But here, in the second book we find that the author's craft is just not up to what he gave us in the first book. There it was action, action, action, with the interludes well placed for the pacing. Here, we have some sequences, his historical (as you can read in the notes) section about the guns taking so long to develop and then implement that it becomes more of a bore than a needed part of the tale.
And the twist at the end, which is left unresolved is a further disappointment. Were there no third book, then one would have that length of time until the third is released to have a completion. No way to write a series.
This book there was less of the angst the character suffered about his parentage, and the hint we have at the end, that his parentage is at the heart of opposing forces at the Admiralty is a theme that should be developed. But we also see that there is too much favoritism giving jobs to Hayden where other Captains and Commanders in the fleet need to either be employed, or have reasons that they aren't. Last is the fault I found with the first book, where the nautical terminology is thrown so fast at us that we have little idea what it means or what is happening to the ship. So much that it can not be followed.
Otherwise, I hope the series continues to develop. It may not rival as I had hoped Stockwin's Kydd, but it is still early days.

A Battle Won (Audible Audio Edition) Sean Thomas Russell Nick Boulton Whole Story Audiobooks Books Reviews
The author gets you interest in both the characters and the historical background to the story. How he weaves all these details together is beyond me.
I truly loved the first book, which I picked up on a whim from Costco, and this I read twice--within the three week library loan period. I'm not sure why I find Mr. Russel's style so engaging but he's my favorite author in the genre, and there are and have been some fine ones. His characterizations are consistent and rich, the plots well-balanced and the pacing first rate. That's all just a fancy way of saying that it's a page turner. The first book more so, but A Battle Won as well. I just wish he wrote a bit faster... One every two years? I suppose that's the price you pay for writing of this quality.
STR's main protagonist in this series, Charles Hayden, is a competent but unlucky officer in the RN who is active in the early stages of the wars against Revolutionary France. In fact he is a bit too unlucky, as an officer with his record would probably either be promoted to post captain much earlier than he is or be relegated to the sidelines. Still, the sea narratives are realistic and exciting.
Any sailor will love this book. If you don't sail forget it, because will be totally lost on the terminology. My only complaint is the lack of ability to identify the characters from earlier pages. I kept asking myself' exactly who is this person?_ I could eventually figure it out, but am a lazy old man and I like to be spoon fed.
Great novel
If I were to report how much I enjoy this series, I'd give it five stars. I simply gobbled it up and am eagerly waiting for the third volume. But it isn't "great" literature--just a fine, fine read--the sort of book in which the reader can burrow himself and spend a wonderful couple of days. It isn't "Moby Dick" or "Heart of Darkness" or "Lord of the Flies". It's just one of the best novels of the twenty-first century. By "best", I mean careful plotting, exciting action scenes and a cast of beautifully depicted characters. Charles Hayden stands right up there with Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey. His shipmates are real, live people; and Russell has a gift for story-telling that can't be beat. Once again we're fighting the Napoleonic Wars on the high seas and thrilling to every minute of it.
Once you've exhausted the 20 Patrick O'Brien novels, the 11 Hornblower books, and the many novels of Alexander Kent (16), Richard Woodman (12), Dudley Pope (18) and others, and you're chomping at the bit for more good Napoleonic Wars Naval escapades, and you have eyesight left, be not dismayed! S. Thomas Russell has arrived, and the adventures of young Charles Hayden have just begun. To my way of thinking, character development and historical accuracy, especially in the operation of a Man of War, are the most important aspect of seafaring novels. Russell has created a likeable and well-rounded lead character in Commander Hayden, and theauthor knows his way around a full-rigged ship. "A Battle Won" is his second in what I hope will be a long-running series of novels.
Completely fun continuation of the first book in the series. The battles at sea and the battle ashore was well described and drew me into the action. It was something I didn't want to put down until finished. The personal life of Charles Hayden was a good little side story to the action and adventure at sea and ashore, but dragged on just a little too much. However this didn't take away from the overall enjoyment or total rating of the book. I really look forward to the third issue, "A Ship of War," which is on the way. I will read the UK version as it is 100+ pages longer than the US version. The US version is called, "Take, Burn or Destroy." The first two books have both been a great read. 4 out of 5 for me.
